ATAL UTKRISHT Vidyalaya is a flagship initiative launched by the Government of Uttarakhand to elevate the standard of government secondary schools by transforming them into model centers of academic excellence and holistic development. This scheme aims to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure, innovative teaching-learning methods, and a supportive environment that fosters the intellectual, social, and emotional growth of every student.
The program focuses on improving educational quality through enhanced physical facilities, digital classrooms, well-trained teachers, and a balanced curriculum that integrates academics with co-curricular and life skills education. It is aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, striving to nurture responsible, skilled, and socially conscious citizens.
Over a planned implementation period of five years from 2022-23 to 2026-27, Atal Utkrisht Vidyalaya is expected to benefit thousands of students across Uttarakhand, setting a replicable example for other schools in the region. This initiative also emphasizes community involvement and continuous monitoring to ensure sustained improvements in school education quality.
The Atal Utkrisht School Scheme was launched by the Government of Uttarakhand in 2018 with the aim of improving the quality of education in government schools, especially in rural and remote areas, by converting them into model CBSE-affiliated institutions. Named in honor of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the scheme initially selected two schools from each block (totaling around 190 schools) to be upgraded in terms of infrastructure, faculty training, and teaching methodology. These schools were provided with smart classrooms, science and computer labs, libraries, clean toilets, and digital learning tools. The medium of instruction was shifted towards English, and teachers were trained accordingly. Additionally, vocational courses like IT, tourism, retail, and automotive studies were introduced for classes 9 and 10 to develop skill-based learning among students. The main objective of the scheme is to provide CBSE-level, holistic, and inclusive education, reduce dropouts, stop migration to private schools, and promote educational equity for all children in Uttarakhand. Over the years, Atal Utkrisht Schools have become a symbol of academic excellence and have played a key role in empowering rural youth through better educational opportunities.
